Actor Mark Ruffalo made a surprise video appearance at Macklemore's "Free Palestine" concert in Dublin on Monday, urging the crowd to "keep fighting for a free Palestine."
"There'll be no peace until there's equality," the Marvel star said in the message, played on the big screen at the 3Arena. "Lots of love, have a great show, keep fighting the good fight." The clip drew a huge cheer from the audience.
Born from a tour exit
The show grew out of Macklemore's removal from Ed Sheeran's U.S. stadium tour about six weeks ago, after the Seattle rapper shouted "Free Palestine" during performances at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. The tour's promoter said venues had indicated they would not host him, and Sheeran later said the decision was the promoter's.
"It has been a crazy six weeks," Macklemore told the crowd, adding that the words "Free Palestine" had become "more controversial than the suffering that made them necessary."
Hozier and Kneecap on stage
Irish singer Hozier and the Belfast rap trio Kneecap performed, while actors Cynthia Nixon and Ilana Glazer also sent video messages. All proceeds go to organizations supporting Palestinians, including Gaza Soup Kitchen, Medical Aid for Palestinians and the Palestine Children's Relief Fund. The Dublin show opened a three-date series that continues in Paris and London this week.
