The Vatican announced on Wednesday that Pope Leo XIV was diagnosed with lung cancer following surgery at Gemelli Hospital in Rome on Tuesday.

The operation involved removing the lower lobe of the pope’s right lung. A tissue examination confirmed the diagnosis of lung adenocarcinoma suspected in preoperative tests.
Pope Leo XIV spent approximately three hours in the operating room. While the surgery lasted about 90 minutes, the Vatican said the operation was completed as planned and was successful.
The pope woke normally after the surgery and, following a brief period of observation, returned to his room on the hospital’s 10th floor.

The Vatican canceled all of the pope’s appointments through October 20 to allow time for his recovery. It had also announced on Tuesday evening that the operation had been successful.
U.S. President Donald Trump, speaking to reporters before leaving for Montana, sent Pope Leo XIV his love and best wishes and said he wanted to see the pope recover quickly.
