CNN and MS NOW reporters were barred from the White House complex after U.S. President Trump announced that he had banned the organizations from the White House.
In a written statement, CNN said it was defending its right to report without government interference and described the measure as an unlawful attack.
CNN reporter Betsy Klein said a Secret Service agent told her that her press pass had been revoked.
MS NOW reporter Akayla Gardner said live on air that a White House official asked her to surrender her access pass. Gardner said the official told her that the pass was no longer valid and that explaining why she was not allowed inside was beyond the official’s authority.
Trump’s White House ban
Trump announced in a social media post that CNN, MS NOW and Politico had been immediately banned from the White House. He justified the decision by alleging that the organizations continuously publish false reports.
Trump also claimed that MS NOW’s previous name, MSNBC, had been changed because of a lack of viewers and credibility. He alleged that Politico had unlawfully received $8 million in subscription fees from the government during the tenure of former U.S. President Joe Biden.
Trump said that media organizations should not include fabrications or falsehoods in their coverage of him, the government or the United States, and stated that other media organizations would also be included in the ban.
