A new legal battle has begun between two major yogurt brands in the US. Danone has filed a lawsuit against its rival Chobani in Manhattan federal court.
The company claims that Chobani’s new yogurt line displays protein content on the packaging higher than it actually is.
Allegations Focus on Protein Content on Labels
In Danone’s complaint, it is argued that Chobani positioned its product "Chobani 20G Protein" as a competitor to its own Oikos Pro in the ultra-high protein yogurt segment, and that the protein amount on multi-serving packages is exaggerated.
Danone states that consumers are being misled and demands that the product labels be changed. The company is also seeking monetary compensation, the amount of which has not yet been determined.
Ongoing Legal Tensions Between the Parties
The case notes that this lawsuit is at least the fourth major legal dispute between Danone and Chobani since 2016.
The text also mentions that Chobani has requested dismissal on procedural grounds of a separate lawsuit filed by Danone, which alleged that Chobani copied the packaging design and "Bright & Mellow" slogan of Danone’s cold coffee product line.
Danone is headquartered in Paris, while its US subsidiary operates in the White Plains, New York area. Chobani’s management center is also located in New York State.
