The statement noted that 16,592 people were injured and approximately 16,000 were left homeless. Search and rescue teams have so far pulled 6,462 people alive from the rubble, it added.
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) had announced that two earthquakes of magnitude 7.2 and 7.5 were recorded in Venezuela on June 24, 39 seconds apart.
The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) said on June 26 that the direct physical damage caused by the earthquakes was estimated at $6.7 billion.
The number of people reported missing after the earthquakes exceeded 68,000 as of June 27. As search and rescue efforts continue in the region, officials warn that the death and injury toll could rise.
