The DHS declared ICE officer Curtland Sawyer a hero for his response to an injured driver in a Missouri traffic crash. On July 11, near Festus, Missouri, Sawyer applied a life-saving tourniquet to the driver of a car that had collided with a semi-truck.
According to a DHS statement, Sawyer rushed to the scene and stopped life-threatening bleeding from the driver's arm. He stayed with the injured person and continued first aid until emergency medical technicians arrived.
DHS Deputy Under Secretary Lauren Bis said, "ICE law enforcement officer Curtland Sawyer immediately provided life-saving medical aid to a driver who had been in a serious collision with a semi-truck in Missouri. Officer Sawyer is a hero." Bis noted that officers do not hesitate to help when they see someone in need.
Sawyer's intervention is the latest example of rescue operations highlighted by the DHS in recent weeks. Last month in Florida, an ICE officer rescued a 6-year-old child who was drowning in a pool and performed CPR. Also last month in Milwaukee, ICE officers rescued a woman trapped in a vehicle that had rolled over after running a red light.
