A dog accidentally started a fire in a Maryland home, killing three pets. The Abingdon Fire Company said the blaze began Friday evening at a house in Belcamp when a dog climbed onto the kitchen counter and turned on the toaster.
Fire investigators reviewed the home's security camera footage after the incident. The footage showed the dog jumping onto the counter, pawing at items, and turning on the toaster. Flames ignited from combustible materials near the appliance and spread to other parts of the house.
Rescue efforts and casualties
The homeowners were not home at the time of the fire. Neighbors managed to rescue two dogs from the flames. However, one dog and two cats died from smoke inhalation. The family's bearded dragon reptile survived after 24 hours of intensive care.
Fire crews responded to 4319 Foxglove Court around 5:30 p.m. and brought the flames under control in about 20 minutes. Officials ruled the fire accidental.
Property damage
The fire caused significant property damage to the home. Fire officials estimated structural damage at about $150,000 and damage to contents at $50,000. The damage resulted from fire, smoke, and water from firefighting efforts.
