In a preliminary hearing in Utah for Tyler Robinson, charged with the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, a video recording of his ex-girlfriend and roommate Lance Twiggs was shown to the court. The prosecution presented this testimony and the messages between the defendant and the witness as evidence.
In the video played by the prosecutors, Twiggs recounted that Robinson told him while crying, 'I wish I hadn't done it.' Twiggs used the words: 'I asked him if what he had said the night before was true, he said yes, he cried a little and said I wish I hadn't done it.'
Admission of Guilt in Text Messages
In the text messages presented to the court, it was seen that Robinson clearly admitted to the assassination. In a note that Twiggs was asked to leave under his keyboard, Robinson had written, 'I had the opportunity to shoot Charlie Kirk and I will take it.' In a later message, he confirmed being at the scene by saying, 'I'm still okay, honey, but I'll be stuck in Orem for a while longer.'
To Twiggs's question, 'It wasn't you who did this, was it????' Robinson reportedly replied, 'I did it. I'm sorry.'
Allegation That Bullets Were Scratched
In the video testimony, Twiggs claimed that Robinson started scratching the bullets about a month before the incident. Twiggs reported that Robinson asked for a Dremel tool, saying he was going hunting with his family, and that he warned him but did not pursue the matter further.
The prosecution disclosed that scratch marks were found on the casings from the murder weapon, and that a similar casing was seized at the home of Robinson and Twiggs. It was observed that Robinson became uncomfortable in the courtroom and shifted in his chair when the Dremel tool was mentioned.
Family's Reaction in Court
Charlie Kirk's family was also present at the hearing. It was heard that Kirk's wife Erika Kirk cried while the messages were read. Family members reacted verbally when Twiggs said he woke up around noon on the day of the incident.
Decision Postponed to September
At the end of the hearing, Judge Tony Graf Jr. announced that he would not make a final decision on the case immediately. Stating that he would hear oral arguments on September 1 after both sides submit written opinions, the judge will decide on that date whether Robinson will be bound over for trial.
Robinson, 23, has not yet pleaded guilty to the charges. If convicted, he could face the death penalty.
