Luis Manuel Aviles, who was detained Saturday in Key West, Florida, was released from federal custody on Tuesday. Aviles is the father of Joshua Aviles, a U.S. sailor serving aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier.
The Aviles family announced Luis Manuel Aviles’s release through Joshua Aviles’s social media account. The family thanked the public for its support throughout the process and requested privacy as they await Joshua’s return.
Reason for the detention
Luis Manuel Aviles, who was born in Nicaragua, has lived in the United States for about 20 years.
Joshua Aviles said his father had a work permit and a Social Security card. The Department of Homeland Security said those documents did not provide official legal status.
The Department of Homeland Security said Border Patrol agents detained Aviles on the grounds that he had entered the country illegally.
