A pregame show at Seattle's Lumen Field came uncomfortably close to disaster on Monday night, when fireworks launched from the stadium exploded right next to a U.S. Army Black Hawk helicopter flying over the field before the Seahawks hosted the Chicago Bears on Monday Night Football.
Video shot from the stands and widely shared on social media shows a helicopter crossing above the stadium as rockets shoot up from the roofline beside the giant American-flag video boards. Within seconds, red-and-white bursts bloom just beside the aircraft, which keeps flying and disappears from the frame as fans cheer below.
Hit or near miss?
Four UH-60M Black Hawks from the Army's 2-158th Assault Helicopter Battalion performed the flyover, according to TotalProSports, which said the footage does not make clear whether the last helicopter was hit and kept flying or narrowly escaped the blasts. Some social media users claimed the fireworks struck the aircraft, while others pointed out that the Black Hawk is built to withstand far worse.
Neither the Army nor the Seahawks had commented on the moment, and there were no reports of damage or injuries. FOX 13 Seattle described helicopters and fireworks filling the sky before kickoff as fans packed the stadium.
Military flyovers are a fixture of NFL pregame ceremonies, especially in November, when the league runs its Salute to Service campaign around Veterans Day. The West Seattle Blog reported that the helicopters had rehearsed over the area a week earlier.
