President Donald Trump on Wednesday called for criminal charges against Mary Peltola, the Democratic nominee in Alaska's Senate race, after The New York Times reported that her campaign discussed recruiting a candidate sharing the name of Republican incumbent Sen. Dan Sullivan. "I think they should be prosecuted," Trump said, according to The Associated Press.
According to the Times, campaign text messages discussed people with the same name as the senator before settling on Dan J. Sullivan, a retired schoolteacher from Petersburg who has no party affiliation and appears on the ballot as Daniel J. Sullivan Jr. The report relied partly on interviews with Peltola's former campaign manager, who the Times said later tried to retract her comments. The second Sullivan has long denied working with Democrats.

Peltola called the report a distraction, saying, "This is all stuff to sell newspapers," and her campaign said it had no involvement with either Sullivan campaign. Sen. Sullivan urged her to "come clean," while Republican Sen. Lisa Murkowski said Alaskans "deserve the honest truth from Mary and her campaign."
Trump has already directed the Justice Department to sue to block certification of the race if Peltola wins, citing the second Sullivan's presence on the ballot.
