A chain-reaction tragedy unfolded in Ohio, United States, as a group gathered near the river one evening. The disaster began Sunday evening when a person who had entered the Scioto River in the Powell suburb to swim began to struggle.
Delaware County Sheriff Jeffrey Balzer said two people jumped in to rescue the struggling person. But when they too needed help, two more entered the water. A total of five people disappeared in the river.
At about 9:00 p.m., a child from the group sought help from a nearby road, saying that family members were in the river. When first responders arrived, they found two women; the women died after being taken to hospital.
On Monday, searches of the river recovered the bodies of three men. The identities of the victims have not yet been released. Officials confirmed there were no boats on the shore at the time and are investigating whether alcohol played a role.
Sheriff Balzer announced that two children under the age of 10 from the group were handed over to family services. He urged the public to have safety equipment such as life jackets when near water.
The Scioto River, which is approximately 370 kilometers long, is known for its fish population and is a popular recreation area for local residents.
