The pilot and three passengers died when a helicopter operated by a company that offers sightseeing flights for tourists crashed in Rio de Janeiro on Saturday. The crash occurred in a wooded area near Vista Chinesa, a popular lookout overlooking the city and the sea.
The difficult-to-reach location of the wreckage made it harder for teams to work at the scene. A fire broke out in the wooded area after the crash, and specialist firefighting teams were dispatched to the site.
Identification efforts continue
The local fire department said the identities of those who died had not yet been confirmed. Teams also faced difficulties reaching the bodies because of the challenging conditions in the wooded area.
Diana Paez, Colombia’s consul general in Brazil, said three of the victims were believed to have been Colombian tourists. Paez said forensic teams were having difficulty identifying the victims because two of the bodies had been completely burned.
