German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul said the United States should maintain its role in diplomatic efforts to end the war in Ukraine.
Wadephul, who visited Ukraine’s capital Kyiv on Saturday, said he would discuss diplomatic steps that could help establish peace in Ukraine during a meeting with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio next week.
The US role in the negotiations
Wadephul said he expects the United States to remain willing to play an active role in negotiations with Ukraine. The German foreign minister also described the decision by European countries to meet in the E3 format during the first half of the year as appropriate.
Wadephul said Germany, France and the United Kingdom would continue their close cooperation, adding that unconventional approaches should be considered and every possible avenue should be explored to launch diplomatic talks.
Wadephul also argued that Moscow was standing in the way of starting negotiations.
Defence and energy on the agenda in Kyiv
During the visit, defence cooperation and preparations for the approaching winter were also discussed. Germany plans to help deliver generators and other energy equipment to Ukraine, support the energy sector and contribute to measures aimed at protecting critical infrastructure.
The German Foreign Ministry said Wadephul’s visit took place as part of events marking the 35th anniversary of Ukraine’s independence, celebrated on 24 August.
The ministry described Ukraine as an important security partner for Germany. It said Germany could benefit from Ukraine’s experience in countering hybrid threats, dealing with modern warfare and strengthening the resilience of state and social structures.
