Hurricane warning remains in effect
The U.S. National Hurricane Center said Lala had strengthened to Category 1, with wind speeds reaching approximately 129 kilometers per hour. The center warned that the hurricane could cause flooding and landslides.
Hawaii County Mayor Kimo Alameda said the hurricane warning remained in effect and urged residents to take shelter in safe locations.
Alameda said the state had recorded the highest number of road closures so far and that power outages were expected to last for an extended period.
Crowds gather at stores and gas stations
As the hurricane approached, crowds formed at stores and gas stations across Hawaii. Evacuation centers were opened in some areas.
The last hurricane to directly hit Hawaii was Hurricane Iniki, which struck Kauai Island as a Category 4 storm in 1992.
