Iran's Permanent Mission to the United Nations accused Washington of perpetuating a 'culture of impunity' on the anniversary of the US Navy's downing of Iran Air flight 655, a passenger plane.
In a post on its X account on July 3, the mission drew a connection between the 1988 incident and a recent missile attack on a school in Minab.
"July 3, 1988: The US Navy shot down Iran Air flight 655 over the Persian Gulf. 290 civilians, including 66 children, lost their lives. Instead of being held accountable, the US president at the time rewarded the crew responsible. "
The statement read: "This is why the culture of impunity continues today: from the skies above flight 655 to the Tomahawk missiles striking a school in Minab and the deaths of 168 schoolchildren. The US still refuses to be held accountable for its crimes."
Iran's UN mission stressed that the US failure to be held accountable for civilian deaths fuels a 'culture of impunity' that persists to this day.
