Footage filmed by Palestinian journalist Ali al-Jaafarawi shows him and several young men forcing their way into a burning apartment in western Gaza City at dawn on Wednesday, minutes after it was hit by an Israeli strike.
Through thick smoke, one of the men can be heard shouting, "Oh God, there are children screaming, they’re alive," before the group calls for water and a blanket and carries out a small girl.
Smoke kept rescuers from her mother
The girl was later identified as Maryam Ahmed Ghanem, about 3 years old. Al-Jaafarawi tried to reach her mother, Reem Awad, but was forced back by the smoke. Awad was killed in the strike, and Maryam suffered burns and serious injuries.

The apartment was in the Rimal neighborhood, near Al-Shifa Hospital. Local reports say Maryam had already lost her father at the start of the war.
With ambulances and civil defense crews often unable to arrive quickly, residents and journalists in Gaza frequently become the first responders to fires and collapsed buildings after strikes.
