New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani criticized the U.S. role in a statement on the situation in Gaza issued on the third anniversary of the October 7, 2023 attacks. Mamdani said that more than 74,000 Palestinians had been killed in Gaza, including more than 21,000 children.
In his written statement, Mamdani said they continued to grieve alongside friends and neighbors who were still mourning those who lost their lives on October 7. He said the day represented profound pain for many New Yorkers.
Mamdani said the suffering in Gaza did not begin on October 7 and did not end that day, describing Israel’s operation in Gaza as genocide. Saying that New Yorkers were confronting this profound suffering, Mamdani argued that U.S. taxes were funding war crimes.

Mamdani said a world in which occupation and apartheid persist must be rejected, and criticized the U.S. government for becoming complicit through arms shipments. He said honoring the dead means fighting for a world in which everyone can live in freedom, security and dignity.
Israel’s attacks on Gaza following the October 7 events caused widespread destruction and a high number of deaths across the region. Some 175,000 people were injured in Gaza.
The Gaza Health Ministry said that Israel’s daily attacks continued despite the ceasefire that took effect in October 2025. According to the ministry, more than 1,400 Palestinians were killed and approximately 5,000 people were injured in these attacks.
