The United States plans to reduce the number of military aircraft and warships assigned to NATO operations on the European continent. The proposed changes are expected to affect the alliance's long-range strike capabilities and surveillance activities.
The Washington administration aims to withdraw a missile-launching submarine and an aircraft carrier from Europe as part of its strategic defense planning. This move is seen as potentially leading to a significant reduction in the American military presence in Europe.
Disruptions Affecting Operational Capacity
The plan reportedly includes numerous cruisers and dozens of fighter jets that support the operational duties of the aircraft carrier in question. The Pentagon is also considering redeploying one of the two strategic bomber groups assigned to European defense under NATO to another theater of operations.
If these changes are implemented, air and naval support for NATO operations in Europe will decrease. Surveillance activities are also expected to be adversely affected.
Trump Administration's Defense Criticism
The Trump administration argued that European allies do not provide sufficient funding for their own defense capabilities. Washington systematically criticized European countries for relying heavily on American military protection.
