Marcell Jacobs succeeded in running under 10 seconds again after 22 months by clocking 9.99 seconds in the 100 meters at the Golden Gala in Rome. The Olympic champion sprinter delivered one of the most remarkable performances of the season with this result.
For the Italian athlete, this time was not just a race result but also a sign of his comeback. After a turbulent period since the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, Jacobs returned to the training system led by Paolo Camossi, accelerating his recovery process.
The performance in Rome confirmed that his 10.01 seconds run in Savona, the season’s first race, was no coincidence. The time achieved in Savona, where wind conditions were favorable, was the first strong indication that Jacobs was on the right track.
Competing in front of 30,000 spectators at the Rome Olympic Stadium, Jacobs finished the race in 9.99 seconds. This marked the 12th time in his career that he ran under 10 seconds.
After the race, Jacobs acknowledged that there are still areas he needs to improve. He mentioned working on correcting some mistakes at the start but said the result gave him confidence.
Jacobs’ season plan now focuses on the European Championships in Birmingham. Scheduled for August 10-16, the event is seen as his most important goal of the year.
The Italian athlete also revealed that his aim to win a third consecutive gold medal at the European Championships remains on the table. Historically, only Valeriy Borzov and Linford Christie have achieved this feat.
In the race in Rome, Jacobs showed a strong reaction at the start and stayed competitive in the early stages. However, he appeared to stiffen and lose fluidity in the final meters. Despite this, his time offers a hopeful outlook for the rest of the season.
Noah Lyles won the race with a time of 9.88 seconds, drawing attention again with his powerful sprint in the final. Eseme set a Cameroon record with 9.94 seconds, Tebogo ran 9.95, Jordan Anthony clocked 9.96, and Jacobs placed fifth with 9.99 in this strong field.
Jacobs also praised the atmosphere in Rome. He said the race boosted his confidence and added, "Seeing the finish under 10 seconds always lifts your spirits," expressing optimism about the upcoming period.
One of his next stops is expected to be Paris. Jacobs is scheduled to return to the track on June 28 as part of the Diamond League program. Afterward, he plans a short family break in Miami to celebrate his son’s birthday.
