A migrant detained at the Delaney Hall Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention center in the U.S. state of New Jersey has died, renewing concerns over conditions at the facility, which has been the focus of protests for months over alleged poor detention conditions.
In a statement, ICE identified the deceased as 41-year-old Salvadoran national Edwin Lopez-Cornejo. The agency said he suffered a medical emergency while in custody and was transported to a hospital, where he later died. Officials added that the exact cause of death will be determined following medical and forensic examinations.
Delaney Hall came under intense public scrutiny in May after approximately 300 migrants launched a hunger strike to protest what they described as poor living conditions, inadequate access to healthcare, and insufficient food. Immigrant rights advocates and several Democratic lawmakers have since called for an independent investigation into conditions at the facility and reiterated demands for its closure.
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security and ICE, however, maintain that detainees receive appropriate medical care and reject allegations that conditions at the center are inadequate. An investigation into the death remains ongoing.
