US Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin drew significant backlash from the Republican base and conservative circles with his statements on immigration. Despite Mullin sharing a stern message on the X platform stating that there would never be amnesty for illegal immigrants, he spoke of the necessity of immigration reform in another speech the same day.
On social media, Mullin said, 'NO amnesty for illegal aliens. We are a nation of laws. If you are in the United States illegally, you will be detained and deported. Period.'
But immediately after this message, Mullin used a different tone while addressing governors at the National Governors Association Summer Meeting in Oklahoma City. There, he said the US needs immigration reform and emphasized the need to distinguish between immigrants seeking legal status and others. He also called for the modernization of certain work visa programs to address the labor shortage.
Former Border Patrol Chief Gregory Bovino harshly criticized Mullin's stance. Bovino said, 'Voters wanted mass deportations. Clear demand. High priority. No ambiguity. The man running Homeland Security is making a case for "immigration reform." We've seen this script before.' Bovino also suggested that Mullin put on a 'master class on how to give terrible answers in a single interview.'
Conservative commentator Robby Starbuck described Mullin's statements as 'a complete betrayal.'
In his speech to the governors, Mullin said there had been no real immigration reform since 1959 and that the reason was political. 'Do you really need immigration reform? Yes, you do,' Mullin said. He stated that there would be 'zero exceptions' for those with criminal records, and for immigrants who came here illegally or overstayed their visas, 'There is nothing I can do for you.'
As the Trump administration's immigration policies are debated, Mullin's statements once again exposed divisions among Republicans, particularly over long-term labor needs and legal immigration.
