During an examination at East Lawn Cemetery in Ithaca, USA, a large colony consisting of approximately 5.5 million wild bees nesting underground was found. Researchers point out that this colony is one of the largest communities documented to date.
According to the study, these bees of the Andrena regularis species provide effective pollination especially during the flowering period of apple trees. Experts state that the discovery shows that protecting natural habitats has direct value for agriculture as well.
