In South Africa, it was revealed that a portion worth 55 million rand of a 715-kilogram cocaine shipment valued at 286 million rand, seized by the police in Johannesburg, has gone missing. Colonel Francois Steyn, an official from the Gauteng Hawks unit who testified at the Madlanga Inquiry Commission, stated that while the cocaine should have been kept in a secure state warehouse, a part of it disappeared without authorization. The incident occurred in 2021 when the cocaine shipment was seized by the police after being transported from Durban Port to Johannesburg. However, allegations arose that some suspicious activities, including involvement by certain police officers, led to part of the cocaine going missing. Steyn said the missing amount of cocaine was approximately 136 kilograms, valued at about 55 million rand. Additionally, investigations were conducted into some police officers and other suspects connected to the case, but the trials were withdrawn for various reasons. These developments highlight the challenges faced in combating organized crime and corruption in South Africa. The Madlanga Commission continues to investigate possible corruption and criminal links within state institutions in such cases.
