More than 180 Jewish community representatives signed an open letter in response to the antisemitism accusations against Mark Ruffalo. The signatories, who expressed support for the American actor and director, argued that the accusations dangerously and unlawfully weaponized antisemitism.
The controversy began after Ruffalo described the agreement between Paramount and Warner Bros. on August 21 as “complicity in genocide” against Palestinians.
Paramount accused Ruffalo of using a commercial dispute as a pretext for resorting to antisemitic tropes. The open letter, however, described the antisemitism accusations against the actor as a “smear campaign.”
The letter highlights Gaza and Hollywood
The signatories said they considered Ruffalo’s highlighting of Israel’s influence in the context of the agreement important.
Drawing attention to the important connection between what is happening in Gaza and events in Hollywood is the exact opposite of antisemitism. As Jews, this is our moral duty.
In addition to Mark Ruffalo, the signatories expressed support for honest people who have the courage to speak the truth to powerful figures.
