Telegram and Google have been fined for failing to comply with laws requiring the removal of prohibited content in Russia.
Moscow’s Tagansky District Court ruled in cases concluded on Wednesday that Telegram must pay 18.4 million rubles and Google 7.6 million rubles. The two fines are worth approximately $221,500 and $91,500, respectively, bringing the total to $313,000.
Other platforms also fined
Russian authorities have previously fined Instagram, YouTube, X and TikTok on similar grounds. The fines were imposed because the platforms failed to remove prohibited content and comply with their legal obligations under Russian law.
Russia’s access ban on Telegram remains in effect.
