Poland took action against a Russian reconnaissance plane detected over the Baltic Sea. Defence Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz announced that Polish fighter jets intercepted a Russian Il-20 aircraft.
In a statement on X, the minister noted that the Russian plane was detected 60 kilometres northwest of Leba in international airspace and that two Polish aircraft on duty intervened. Kosiniak-Kamysz acknowledged that Polish airspace was not violated in this incident.
However, the Polish minister claimed the Russian plane was flying without a flight plan and with its transponder turned off. The Russian Defence Ministry, in previous statements, has consistently stressed that Russian warplanes operate over neutral waters in full compliance with international flight rules, without entering air traffic routes and without causing dangerous proximity.
