South Sudan-born NBA player Wenyen Gabriel returned to the land he fled as a baby with his family and opened a basketball court at Doro Refugee Camp. Gabriel held an event with young people from the camp and children from nearby host communities.
The star player noted that some children played basketball for the first time in their lives, saying, "It was truly indescribable happiness. Seeing them have fun together and share this sport that I love so much was a very special experience for me."
Emphasizing that the people of South Sudan have urgent needs such as food, shelter and clean water, Gabriel said, "People who have experienced so much hardship need a space where they can come together as a community and spend time together."
