Benjamin Netanyahu is preparing changes to his flight and schedule for his planned visit to the United States on Thursday. Under the revised plan, his plane will land at a military base in New Jersey or Newark Airport rather than New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport.
The reported plan change was attributed to difficulties encountered while coordinating with US authorities, as well as concerns that New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani could order the airport to depart without waiting for Netanyahu's plane.
Netanyahu is expected to significantly shorten his schedule in New York because of protest demonstrations and not stay overnight in the city. The planned meeting with American billionaire Elon Musk in Texas has also been canceled.
Under the previous schedule, Netanyahu was expected to arrive in New York on Wednesday, address the United Nations General Assembly on Thursday and then return to Israel. Under the new plan, he is expected to arrive in the United States on the morning of his speech, address the General Assembly at 2 p.m. local time and then travel directly to Tel Aviv.
Netanyahu is also alleged not to be meeting with US President Donald Trump during his visit to the United States.
Mamdani's remarks about Netanyahu
In July, Mamdani said he did not have the legal authority to enforce the arrest warrant issued for Netanyahu by the International Criminal Court. Saying that the authority belonged to the federal government, Mamdani called on the US administration to join the court and enforce the arrest warrant.
The New York mayor also said that Netanyahu and other people accused of committing war crimes had no place in New York.
After more than two years of fighting in the Gaza Strip, a ceasefire agreement may have been reached in October. More than 73,000 Palestinians have reportedly died and more than 174,000 have been injured since October 2023.
