Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu faced a walkout protest as he took the podium at the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York on Thursday.
As Netanyahu began his address, dozens of delegates stood up and left the General Assembly hall. Images from the chamber showed groups of representatives moving toward the exits shortly after the Israeli prime minister started speaking.
The walkout became one of the most visible moments surrounding Netanyahu’s appearance at the UN, drawing attention inside the chamber and across international media.
Netanyahu continued his speech despite the protest, addressing regional security issues, Iran and ongoing conflicts in the Middle East.
Protests also held outside the UN
Netanyahu’s appearance at the General Assembly also drew demonstrations outside the United Nations headquarters in New York.
Protesters gathered in the surrounding area as world leaders and diplomatic delegations attended the annual high-level meetings. Demonstrations focused largely on Israel’s policies and the war in Gaza.
The scenes inside the General Assembly hall added another dimension to the protests, with the coordinated walkout taking place in full view as Netanyahu delivered his address.
