A plane carrying Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who is scheduled to address the United Nations Headquarters, landed at New York Stewart International Airport instead of New York’s main international airports.
Located approximately 106 kilometers from the United Nations Headquarters, Stewart Airport is outside New York City and is used for both civilian and military purposes.
Concerns that New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani might not allow Netanyahu’s plane to remain at airports in the city may have influenced the decision to divert the aircraft to this airport.
Flight route included three countries
During Netanyahu’s trip to the United States, his aircraft used the airspace of Greece, Italy and France despite the arrest warrant issued against him by the International Criminal Court.
Protests expected at UN General Assembly
Last year, when Netanyahu took the podium to address the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly, representatives of numerous countries left the hall in protest. Netanyahu addressed a largely empty chamber.
This year, protests against Netanyahu are expected at the United Nations General Assembly over the Israeli government’s ongoing attacks in Gaza despite the ceasefire, its land seizures in the occupied West Bank, and its attacks on Syria and Lebanon.
