Neue Galerie, which opened in New York in 2001 and hosts the richest collection of 20th-century German and Austrian Modernism, will merge with its neighbor, the Metropolitan Museum, in 2028. This merger was announced ahead of the reopening after renovation, coinciding with Neue Galerie's 25th anniversary. Ronald Lauder and his daughter Aerin Lauder Zinterhofer will donate 13 works from their personal collections by artists such as Otto Dix, George Grosz, Christian Schad, and Gustav Klimt to the merged institution. The William Starr Miller House building, home to Neue Galerie, will be known as the Met Ronald S. Lauder Neue Galerie, and the collection, programs, and the Vienna-style Café Sabarsky restaurant will remain here. Lauder expressed his confidence in the leadership of Met director Max Hollein and stated that this merger will strengthen Neue Galerie's legacy. This step will significantly expand the Met's early 20th-century Austrian and German art collection and create new discovery areas for art lovers.
