Qatar has initiated a diplomatic effort to defuse the recently heightened military tensions between the US and Iran. A delegation of Qatari negotiators has arrived in the Iranian capital, Tehran, for this purpose.
The delegation's talks with Iranian officials are being conducted in coordination with the US. On the agenda are the implementation of the Islamabad Agreement signed on June 14, the latest tension spike, and navigation disputes in the Strait of Hormuz.
Agreement and subsequent conflict
The US and Iran signed the Islamabad Agreement on June 14 to end the war. The deal provided for a 60-day negotiation period for a final agreement.
However, the US military launched new attacks on Iran on July 8, and Iran in turn targeted US bases in neighboring countries. Qatar's mediation initiative aims to calm this conflict environment.
