Sarah Snook said she was initially hesitant about the new series All Her Fault, mainly due to the intense work schedule and the possibility of being away from her family. She explained that at the time she was balancing theater work and caring for her new child.
Snook shared that when the series was first offered to her, she thought, "I can't do this," especially because being away from home for a long time seemed challenging. However, her perspective began to change when the possibility of filming in Australia emerged.
What attracted her to the script?
The actress said that reading the script excited her about the idea of starring in a television thriller for the first time. According to Snook, what set the series apart was not only its gripping plot but also the strong relationships developed between the characters.
Snook believed the production could keep viewers engaged not just through the storyline but also by showing how the characters are interconnected. For this reason, she emphasized the emotional aspect of the story when deciding to join the project.
What story does All Her Fault tell?
In the series, Snook plays Marissa Irvine, who lives in an affluent Chicago suburb. When Marissa goes to pick up her son from a playdate, she discovers that the person who opens the door neither recognizes her nor her child, sparking a search for the missing boy.
As the story unfolds, this disappearance shakes Marissa’s relationship with her husband Peter and her business partnership with close friend Colin. The investigation reveals that the family’s surrounding relationships are more fragile than they appeared.
Later in the season, questions arise about who was responsible for the severe injury Peter’s brother Brian suffered as a child. It also comes to light that a young nanny named Josie kidnapped Milo, having placed him in the role of her deceased child.
How did she describe the difference between Shiv Roy and Marissa?
Snook also answered why she chose this project after Succession, saying Marissa is a very different character from Shiv Roy. While both characters share common ground in the worlds of wealth and finance, their personalities are quite distinct.
The actress described Marissa as warmer, more cheerful, and more protective. She said portraying how this character changes amid a devastating loss and a crisis of trust in her husband was challenging but a powerful experience.
How did motherhood influence her role?
Snook said becoming a mother helped her better understand the fear her character experiences. She doesn’t see herself as an anxious person but explained that after becoming a parent, she could more easily imagine the emotional weight of losing a child.
The actress also noted that costume design played an important role in conveying the character’s mood, with Marissa’s wardrobe varying from layered to simple depending on the scene, reflecting her state of fear.
Production process and the series’ reception
While serving as an executive producer on the series, Snook spoke about the work culture she learned from teams she had worked with before. She believes that although hierarchy is necessary for progress during production, a sense of equality regarding the value of labor should be maintained.
Snook shared that All Her Fault has received much more attention than expected and has achieved great viewership success. Regarding plans for a new season or return, she said she has not received any clear information.
She also expressed that the series’ simultaneous following by a large audience has revived the fading sense of shared viewing experience. According to her, people coming together around a production still makes the collective experience in front of the screen powerful.
