Saudi Deputy Defense Minister Khalid al-Beyari held high-level talks in Washington on defense industry cooperation and technology transfer.
According to the Saudi Defense Ministry, al-Beyari first met with Defense Security Cooperation Agency Director Mary Morgan. The two sides discussed defense industry cooperation and issues of mutual interest.
Al-Beyari later met at the Pentagon with Under Secretary of Defense for Acquisition and Sustainment Michael Duffy, Under Secretary of Defense for Policy Elbridge Colby, and Under Secretary of the Air Force for International Affairs Gentry Stephen. The talks emphasized strengthening defense cooperation between the two friendly nations and developing joint areas that contribute to regional security and stability.
The Saudi official also held a meeting with Under Secretary of State for Arms Control and International Security Thomas Dinanno, where they discussed Saudi-US relations and their roles in regional security.
In the final leg of the visit, al-Beyari met with CEOs of major American defense companies. The meeting assessed cooperation opportunities in defense industry, research and development, technology transfer, and localization in line with Saudi Vision 2030 goals.
These diplomatic contacts took place amid tensions sparked by the US-Iran war that erupted in late February. Saudi Arabia and the US carried out attacks last week targeting logistical facilities and weapons depots in Iraq said to belong to Iran-backed groups. Iraq's Popular Mobilization Forces announced on Wednesday that 20 of its members were killed and 32 others wounded in these airstrikes on official headquarters in seven provinces.
