Sean Penn explained why he did not attend this year's Oscars. The actor said his decision to skip the award ceremony was driven by prioritizing his mental health.
Speaking in an interview with CNN host Kaitlan Collins at the Tribeca Festival in New York, Penn openly shared his feelings about the ceremony. He said Oscar night has long been a socially uncomfortable experience for him.
Penn stated that he does not enjoy being in large groups and prefers not to be in crowds larger than eight people. According to him, when two hours are divided among many people in one night, the time per person is very limited, which makes him feel overwhelmed.
The actor also said he deliberately planned his visit to Ukraine to coincide with the Oscars, ensuring he would not be present at the ceremony.
Emphasizing that his choice was not only about personal comfort, Penn noted that those around him were aware of his decision. He said the team of One Battle After Another and Warner Bros. had also decided not to attend the ceremony, and everyone understood this.
Penn expressed that the feeling he often experiences at award ceremonies is more relief than victory. He believes that attending the Golden Globes this year was one of the experiences that clarified his perspective on such events.
The actor said he decided after that night that he no longer wanted to participate in such events. He noted that crowded, lengthy award nights cause him anxiety and discomfort.
Penn also recalled the two Oscars he previously won in his career. He received the Best Actor award for Mystic River in 2003 and for Milk in 2009.
Although he won the Best Supporting Actor award at this year's ceremony, his absence from the venue drew attention. Penn's explanation has satisfied curiosity about why he skipped the event.
Regarding his visit to Ukraine, Penn has been closely involved with the country since the war began in 2022. The Ukrainian railway authority also announced that he was given a symbolic award made from the wreckage of a train carriage.
