In American Canyon, California, a large-scale theft in July was solved using evidence the suspects themselves provided. On July 6, tools, copper cables, and a vehicle worth over $100,000 were stolen from a business.
An investigation by the American Canyon Police Department revealed that the suspects had taken selfies during the theft. Police responded to a reported theft on the 1100 block of Green Island Road and, upon investigation, identified two vehicles linked to the crime.
Selfies illuminate the path to arrest
One day after the incident, the Alameda County Sheriff's Office stopped one of the vehicles. The driver, 53-year-old Hayward resident Daniel Lemas, was taken into custody. Police seized selfie photos from Lemas's phone that he had taken while committing the theft. Lemas was arrested on a charge of theft and sent to the Napa County Jail.
On July 8, the Hayward Police Department stopped the second vehicle and detained 49-year-old Dennis Tylij. When American Canyon police arrived at the scene, Tylij was also taken into custody and charged with conspiracy, then sent to the same facility.
Some stolen property recovered
Investigators recovered some of the stolen items in a raid on a home on the 3200 block of Arden Road in Hayward.
According to local media reports, Daniel Lemas was released after posting $25,000 bail, while Dennis Tylij remains in custody.
