Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić declared that the US will play a long-term role in his country's energy policies. In a statement to the Financial Times, Vučić said, "When it comes to the energy sector, the Americans could really have influence and leverage for years and decades to come."
This statement is seen as a reflection of the deepening energy cooperation between the two countries. The governments in Belgrade and Washington signed a strategic cooperation agreement in the energy field in September 2024, and the agreement entered into force in March 2025.
In another statement in June, Vučić also announced that Serbia is preparing a multi-billion dollar contract with the US for the construction of the region's largest pumped-storage hydroelectric power plant. This project represents a concrete example of US investment in energy infrastructure in the Balkans.
