Sotheby’s earned a total of 303.9 million dollars at the modern art auction held in New York. The auction included not only traditional artworks but also extraordinary objects, including a record bid for René Magritte’s 1955 work 'Femme-bouteille'. The highest price was achieved by Henri Matisse’s approximately 1919 work 'La Chaise Lorraine' at 48.4 million dollars. Pablo Picasso’s 'Arlequin (Buste)' sold for 42.6 million dollars, while Vincent van Gogh’s 1888 drawing 'La Moisson en Provence' found a buyer at 29.4 million dollars. The auction took place between Sotheby’s estimated range of 242 million and 320.2 million dollars, marking a 63% increase compared to a similar sale last year. 97.6% of the works were sold at the sale. Julian Dawes, head of Sotheby’s modern art department, noted that collectors are active in the market and new billionaires may show interest in the art market. It was also stated that Asian collectors showed intense interest in the works of 10 artists. Sotheby’s auction was part of a busy week in the art market, along with other art sales held on the same day by Christie’s and Phillips.
