South Korea has welcomed the ceasefire agreement reached between the US and Iran, which aims to end months of conflict. The Seoul administration also expressed hope for the safe navigation of ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz to be restored.
Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Park Il stated that the government views the agreement and the significant progress toward restoring stability and peace in the region positively. Park also praised the leadership of US President Donald Trump and the diplomatic efforts of the involved parties and related countries in reaching the agreement.
Seoul expects that ships affected by the situation in the strait will soon be able to move safely again. According to the statement, 24 vessels linked to South Korea are among these ships.
South Korea emphasized its continued participation in international efforts to ensure freedom of navigation in this vital waterway. This stance reflects the country's close attention to developments in the strait due to its importance for energy and trade transportation.
It was reported that 137 South Korean sailors remain in the region. These individuals stayed after Iran blocked passage through the strategic waterway following US-Israel attacks at the end of February.
Earlier, Trump had stated that Washington and Tehran had reached a peace agreement and indicated that the Strait of Hormuz would reopen following the signing of the agreement this week.
