Defending US Open champion Carlos Alcaraz announced that he will compete in the tournament, bringing his four-month absence from official matches to an end after suffering a right wrist injury.
The Spanish tennis player, ranked second in the world, announced his decision in a brief post on his X account.
Alcaraz missed four tournaments
Alcaraz has not played an official match since April 14, after competing in only one match at the Barcelona Open. His right wrist injury also forced him to miss the French Open and Wimbledon, as well as the Toronto and Cincinnati tournaments during the North American hard-court season.
The Spanish player had initially planned to return to the court at the Cincinnati tournament. However, as he prepared to defend his US Open title, he chose to devote more time to his recovery.
The US Open holds an important place in Alcaraz’s career
The 23-year-old tennis player, who has won seven Grand Slam titles, won the Australian Open last January and became the youngest player to win titles at all four major tournaments.
Alcaraz won his first major title at the US Open on the courts of Flushing Meadows in 2022. Following that victory, he became the youngest player to reach the top of the world rankings published by the Association of Tennis Professionals.
