A Sikorsky S-64 firefighting helicopter supporting crews battling the Widemouth 2 Fire, which has affected a large area in Utah, crashed. The status of the two people aboard remains unknown after the crash, which occurred near Richfield within Sevier County.
The Federal Aviation Administration said the crash occurred in an area near Millard County that has been affected by the fire. The U.S. Forest Service said the incident was still developing and that emergency response teams had reached the crash site.
The agency said responding to the crash was the priority and urged the public to stay away from the scene so crews could focus on their work.
Wreckage to be examined
The National Transportation Safety Board assigned an investigator to examine the wreckage. The investigation is expected to begin after the investigator reaches the area on Saturday.
Utah Gov. Spencer Cox said wildland firefighting aviation personnel were aboard the helicopter. Cox said fighting wildland fires was one of the most dangerous jobs in the world and called for emergency response teams and investigators to be given time to continue their work.
