A survey of university students in the United States found that favorable views of the Palestinian people were more widespread than favorable views of the Israeli people, and that a majority of participants supported Palestinians’ right to establish a state.
The online survey, conducted in August 2026 by the Morris and Marlene Cohen Center for Jewish Studies at Brandeis University, included 3,989 students from 303 universities across the United States. While 74% of participants said they believed Israel was committing genocide against the Palestinian people, 25% disagreed.
Support for Palestinians exceeds support for Israelis
The survey found that 77% of students held favorable views of the Palestinian people. The share expressing favorable views of the Israeli people stood at 52%.
While 41% of students expressed favorable views of the Palestinian Authority, 15% held favorable views of the Israeli government. Forty-six percent described their view of the Israeli government as “extremely unfavorable,” while 39% described it as “unfavorable.”
82% of students support a Palestinian state
Eighty-two percent of participants supported Palestinians’ right to self-determination and to establish a Palestinian state.
Attacks continue in Gaza and the West Bank
According to figures from the Gaza Health Ministry, 1,313 Palestinians have been killed and 4,361 injured in Israeli violations of the ceasefire since the truce took effect on October 10, 2025.
More than 73,000 Palestinians have been killed and more than 174,000 injured in Israel’s attacks on the Gaza Strip, launched with US support on October 8, 2023. Children and women make up the majority of those killed and injured.
In the occupied West Bank, Israeli forces have continued raids and arrests in cities, towns and refugee camps since the war in Gaza began. Settler attacks on Palestinians and their property have also increased.
