A mother in the US state of Tennessee was arrested on charges of attempting to drown her own child in a backyard pool. According to a statement from the Washington County Sheriff's Office, 31-year-old Mikaylee Rae Beirne allegedly carried out the act at a home in Johnson City on July 15.
The incident came to light when another adult in the home was told by one of the children, who ran up and said Beirne was forcibly holding the other child underwater. The adult immediately went to the pool and intervened.
Sheriff's Office officials stated that the adult told Beirne to let go of the child, but Beirne refused. The adult then pulled Beirne away and removed the child from the water.
Medical teams called to the scene determined that the child had minor injuries and bruises. Meanwhile, Beirne left the scene before police arrived.
Mikaylee Rae Beirne was arrested shortly after on charges of aggravated child abuse and neglect. She is being held at the Washington County Detention Center on $50,000 bail.
