Authorities in the U.S. state of Tennessee plan to execute Christa Gail Pike on Wednesday for the 1995 murder of Colleen Slemmer in Knoxville.
The execution of 50-year-old Pike is scheduled to take place by lethal injection at 10 a.m. local time at the Riverbend Maximum Security Institution in Nashville. Pike was sentenced to death in 1996 for Slemmer’s murder.

Tennessee Governor Bill Lee said he would uphold the sentence imposed by the state court after reviewing Pike’s clemency request and the case. Lee said he would not intervene to halt the execution.

Pike is the only woman prisoner on Tennessee’s death row. Defense attorneys reacted to the decision, noting that if it is carried out, Tennessee would become the first state in more than 200 years to execute a woman prisoner.
An application filed with the U.S. Supreme Court is still pending. However, filing the application does not automatically stay the execution.
