The United States announced a new visa restriction policy targeting some foreigners in South Africa who implement or support certain policies. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Tuesday that the policy targets people linked to practices that promote race-based discrimination, incite violence or enable the confiscation of land without compensation.
Referring to U.S. President Donald Trump, Rubio argued that the people of South Africa had been failed by a government whose policies of racial tension toward the Afrikaner minority were harming the country’s economy.
The U.S. secretary also accused the South African government of failing to adequately combat crime in rural areas and violent, degrading rhetoric. Rubio further said the government had not taken sufficient action against race-based discriminatory policies targeting Afrikaners and other minority groups.
Rubio said that people he held responsible should not be allowed to be in the United States.
