Bonnie Tyler, the powerful voice of British pop rock, has died at the age of 75 in Portugal. The singer's family and team announced that she passed away unexpectedly due to the illness for which she was receiving treatment.
The family said in a written statement: "We are deeply saddened to announce that Bonnie passed away unexpectedly in Portugal due to the illness she was being treated for."
Health problems began in May
Bonnie Tyler's health problems began in May with an emergency intestinal surgery. Her family announced that the singer went into a coma after the operation and that the planned summer tour had to be postponed.
At that time, the family stated that Tyler's condition was serious but stable, and that doctors were optimistic about a full recovery. They called on the media to stop speculating.
In mid-June, her manager announced that Tyler had come out of the coma, but her health condition was still very poor and she remained in intensive care at a hospital in Portugal. The family also confirmed that the singer was no longer in a coma and thanked for the messages of support from around the world.
A hit that topped the US charts
Bonnie Tyler, whose real name was Gaynor Hopkins, was born in Wales in 1951. The peak of her career came in 1983. The song "Total Eclipse of the Heart," written by Jim Steinman, sold millions of copies, topping the charts in both the UK and the US, and made the singer an international star.
Another major hit by the artist was "Holding Out for a Hero," which was featured on the soundtrack of the 1984 film "Footloose." Her song "Here She Comes" was also used in the remake of the film "Metropolis."
Grammy nominations and honors
Throughout her career, Bonnie Tyler earned three Grammy nominations. She was nominated for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance for "Total Eclipse of the Heart," and for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance for the album "Faster Than the Speed of Night" and the song "Here She Comes."
In 2013, she represented the United Kingdom in the Eurovision Song Contest with the song "Believe in Me." In 2023, she was awarded the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (MBE) for her contributions to music, and the same year she published her autobiography "Straight From the Heart." Her 18th and final studio album, "The Best Is Yet to Come," was released in 2021.
In March, the artist performed her new song "Only Love" for the first time at a concert in London.
