The U.S. National Hurricane Center (NHC) announced that Berta, the first storm to make landfall in this year's Atlantic hurricane season, came ashore near New Orleans, Louisiana. The storm's wind speed was measured at about 75 kilometers per hour.
Meteorologists say the storm's asymmetric structure and strong wind shear prevented widespread destruction. Most of the rainfall was directed into the Gulf of Mexico. The storm is expected to gradually weaken due to dry air and unfavorable winds and move toward eastern Texas.
According to local media reports, oil and natural gas companies, particularly Chevron and BP, evacuated some personnel from offshore platforms in the Gulf of Mexico in advance and suspended some operations.
Officials had previously reported that the storm would cause heavy rainfall along the coasts of Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana throughout the week, then shift westward toward Texas.
