The US is once again using B-1 strategic bombers in its strikes on targets in Iran. According to Axios, these planes took off from a base in England and headed toward Iranian airspace.
Flight tracking sites indicate that the B-1 bombers were also used in the attacks on Iran on February 28. However, the US has not officially announced that these aircraft were used in the military operations that resumed about 12 days ago.
In recent days, the US has been carrying out successive airstrikes on targets inside Iran. The Tehran administration, for its part, has been responding with missile and drone (UAV) attacks on military bases and facilities it claims are linked to Washington in the region.
The escalation comes despite a memorandum of understanding signed between Washington and Tehran last June. That memorandum called for a halt to hostilities and the start of negotiations for a broader agreement.
US President Donald Trump announced on July 8 that the ceasefire had ended following attacks on tankers in the Strait of Hormuz. Washington, claiming Iran was behind those attacks, resumed strikes on targets inside Iran. Iran, for its part, stepped up its retaliations in the region.
The US is demanding that Iran stop attacks on ships and guarantee freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz. Iran, however, insists that ship passages through this critical chokepoint overlooking its coastline be regulated by a mechanism of its own design. The dispute is heightening concerns that oil and natural gas exports from the region could be disrupted.
On Wednesday, Trump threatened that any Iranian attack on ships or navigation in the Strait of Hormuz would be met with strikes on infrastructure targets in Iran, including bridges and power plants.
