Former U.S. President Donald Trump continued his criticism of Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni in a post on his Truth Social platform. Trump claimed that Meloni 'repeatedly insisted' on taking a photo with him during the recent G7 summit in France.
Meloni, in a statement on Friday, had denied these claims, saying Trump had 'made up a baseless story.' However, Trump insisted on his claim in a post on Saturday.
Criticized for Withdrawing Support on Iran
Trump criticized Meloni not only over the photo claim but also for her policies towards Iran. According to Trump, Meloni's political popularity in Italy is 'collapsing,' and the reason is her refusal to support the U.S. in preventing Iran from developing nuclear weapons.
Trump argued that Italy's refusal to allow the U.S. to use its airbases during the war against Iran caused logistical complications for Washington. Trump stated, "After the U.S. militarily defeated Iran, Meloni wants to be our friend again to boost her popularity. No, thank you."
Meloni's Sharp Response
Giorgia Meloni responded to Trump's claims in a video message released on Friday. Meloni stated that Trump's claims were 'pure fiction,' saying, "Italy and I do not beg."
Footage from the G7 summit showed Meloni and Trump sitting side by side on a couch having a long conversation. Trump later said he was only 'showing closeness' to Meloni during that chat.
Diplomatic Tension Grows
Trump's statements have caused tension in Italy-U.S. relations. Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani announced on Friday that he has canceled a planned visit to the U.S. next week. This move is seen as a diplomatic response to Trump's words.
Meloni, who was elected to lead a highly conservative coalition government in October 2022, had been seen as one of Trump's closest allies in Europe and often tried to bridge differences between the U.S. and the European continent.
